Signature song from this southern rock cornerstone. Lead singer/songwriter Ronnie Van Zant with some high school friends started a band named after their gym coach who ridiculed their long hair. With practice, time, and talent they grew from kid band to national phenomenon. Tragedy struck in 1977 with a plane crash involving Van Zant, guitarist/singer Steve Gaines, singer Cassie Gaines, Drummer Artimus Pyle, guitarist Gary Rossington, guitarist Allen Collins, and keyboardist Billy Powell among others. Van Zant with Steve and Cassie Gaines did not survive. The others suffered profound injuries. Surviver Billy Powell died this January of a reported heart attack.
